The short version. Train Planner does not collect your personal data. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking of any kind. Everything you save stays on your device. If you choose to share your location, it is used on your device to find nearby stations and is never sent to us.
1. Who we are
Train Planner (“the app”) is published by Grey Fox Limited, a company registered in the United Kingdom (“we”, “us”, “our”). We are the data controller for any personal data described in this policy.
This policy explains what the app does and does not do with information, and applies to the Train Planner mobile app only.
2. Information we do not collect
We want to be explicit about this, because it is unusual. We do not collect, store, sell or share:
- Your name, email address, phone number or postal address
- Account credentials — the app has no sign-in and no user accounts
- Analytics or usage statistics about how you use the app
- Advertising identifiers, and we do not serve advertising
- Any data used for tracking you across other apps or websites
We operate no user database. We have no way to identify you, and we could not respond to a request to “look up my data” because no such record exists.
3. Location
The app can use your device’s location to find stations near you and to make journey planning quicker. This is entirely optional:
- Your device will ask for permission before location is used for the first time. If you decline, the app continues to work — you simply search for stations by name instead.
- Your location is used on your device to work out which stations are nearby. It is not transmitted to Grey Fox Limited, and we do not store it, log it or build any location history.
- You can withdraw permission at any time in your device settings (on iOS: Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services; on Android: Settings › Apps › Train Planner › Permissions).
4. Information stored on your device
To be useful, the app remembers things locally — for example your recent searches, saved or favourite stations and journeys, and your display preferences.
This information is held in the app’s own storage on your device. It is not synced to us or to any third party. Deleting the app removes it permanently. If your device is backed up (for example to iCloud or Google Drive), that backup is handled by your device provider under their privacy policy, not ours.
5. Rail data and third-party services
To show timetables, routes and live departure information, the app requests data from third-party rail data services. These requests contain only what is needed to answer your query — such as station codes, dates and times. They do not include your name, your account (there is none) or your precise location.
Those providers may log technical information such as the originating IP address as part of operating their service, in the same way any website or API does. We do not control those logs and we do not receive them.
The app is distributed through the Apple App Store and/or Google Play. If you have opted in with Apple or Google to share diagnostic and usage data with developers, those platforms may make anonymised or aggregated crash reports available to us. That sharing is controlled by your device settings and by Apple’s and Google’s own privacy policies — not by the app.
6. Legal basis and your rights
Under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 you have rights over your personal data, including rights of access, correction, erasure, restriction, objection and portability.
Because we hold no personal data about you, there is in practice nothing for us to retrieve, correct, export or delete. Any data the app holds is on your device and under your direct control: you can clear it in the app or by deleting the app. If you believe we hold personal data about you, please contact us and we will investigate.
You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office, the UK supervisory authority, at ico.org.uk.
7. Children
The app is suitable for general audiences and is not directed at children in particular. Because we collect no personal data from anyone, we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
8. Data retention and security
We retain no personal data, so there is no retention period to state. Data held on your device is protected by your device’s own security, such as your passcode, Face ID or Touch ID. Requests the app makes to rail data services are sent over an encrypted HTTPS connection.
9. Changes to this policy
If the app ever changes in a way that affects this policy — for example if a future version introduces accounts or analytics — we will update this page and revise the “last updated” date above before that version is released. Material changes will be made clear in the app.
10. Contact us
If you have a question about this policy or about privacy in the app, please get in touch. We read every message.
